facebook and twitter is just noise

I attendend a the Bridge Building session at Roots Camp, a new media unconference for organizers and political campaigns. Towards the end some one says one of the ways to build community or bridges is through Facebook and Twitter. I was comtemplating on responding to this statement. It is true as one of the ways but not the ONLY way. As I was pondering over the idea of saying "it's not the only way and make sure you know which communities are in those networks." Someone decides to make a few statement and the first one was "Facebook and Twitter is just noise"

Building bridges or communities online and off is never easy but it will NEVER happen if you dismiss it all as just noise. It will never be an easy process when it comes to reaching diverse groups across various communities but not making the attempts is one way I can guarantee it will never work.

I tweeted about it and recieved several responses. Here are a few:

loryn24 @digitalsista if they think it's just noise, they aren't using it right. #rc10

chrisgoldenAgreed on this. Stealing convo for a webinar. RT @loryn24:@digitalsista if they think it's just noise, they aren't using it right. #rc10

swegl@digitalsista isn't everything just noise? the value is in what you can glean from the noise. #rc10

Here are my follow up tweets

"it's noise when you don't tune in! r.t @swegl@digitalsista isn't everything just noise? the value is in what you can glean from the noise"

and

@swegl @loryn24 @chrisgolden SM is only noise 2 those that can't focus on finding value. Like going 2 thrift store spending $1 on $600 prod"

For some searching through the "noise" which is volumes of content and free flowing ideas, can seem pointless and daunting. However, just like going through the thrift store looking through random items you do find that one item worth $600 and there's a $1 sticker on it. You look around wondering why hasn't anyone bought it yet before you realize you better take it to the counter and pay for it before some one else does.
