It's hard to walk into a toy store and not be struck by the utter excitement of children facing such a vast array of games, building sets, race cars, dolls, action figures, arts and crafts, infant toys and stuffed animals.   It's rational to cheer girls on in math, science

hundreds of girls will flock to the California Institute of Technology to celebrate the joys of science. Targeted at fifth- to eighth-graders, the Sally Ride Science Festival will encourage its pony-tailed and barretted audience to see science as a viable, vibrant career option. That Ride is using her cachet as our most famous female astronaut to champion the cause of girls in science is to be applauded; what is so dispiriting is that such efforts are still needed.

A new web-based show encourages young women to tune in and associate DIY less with bread making and more with breadboard wiring.

Created by Alison Lewis, a web designer and instructor at Parsons School of Design, Switch is a free online show connects young women with technology by guiding them through fashion and design projects.

  Board Member

I am currently a board member of several small and large local and national organizations. My roles have included Vice President, Member Services Chair, and Secretary. My responsibilities have included technology related support, program development and fundraising. Much of my current volunteer experience is focused on being on advisory and organizational boards. I have assisted new startup and 25 year old organizations, the majority have been minorities and women run organizations.

Researching for various assignments, articles, and papers for database systems and other documentation for the purpsose of publishing. Continuously conducting researche, writing articles and web reviews.

Online editor for portal directories listing web sites, resources and other online information. Special topic areas include but not limited to the Digital Divide, Technology Issues for Minorities, Women's Issues, and more.

Younger Women's Task Force, 2005 - Present

I began as the Co-Chair as we collectively worked on the purpsoe and membership of the program. We continued working on the the development phase of the task force to look at the potential policy agenda, strategy, and program impacts of the issues for young women. Currently I am on the new board focused on diversity and fundraising .

African American Women's Resource Center (AAWRC), 1998 - 2005

Participation included the working committee to Board of Directors. My responsiblities included board and program development and Strategic Planning for a Non Profit organization focused on resources and program for African American Women and girls.

FairFax County Girls and Technology Committee, 2001 - 2003
A committee designed to assist existing programs in schools and technology centers with curricula, fundraising and program development. The issues included how to engage girls in more challenging technology ograms, classes or schools dealing with technology classes as electives.

Sisters to Sister Investment Club, 1997 - 2003
My responsibilites as Assistant Presiding Partner (Vice President) included the educational component of the Investment Club. Facilitating 2 to 4 hour training segments and an ongoing training module for each meeting. This includes developing a list of resources (online and off-line), developing a training manual for step by step instructions for stock analysis, enewsletter, assisting with overall market analysis, and Industry leader for the Technology Sector.

Social Entrepreneur Online Moderator, 2001

  • Setting up and moderating online group participation.
  • Sending email reminders for assignments and project due dates.
  • Up loading files and documents needed for members that were not able to attend the class.
  • Giving instructions on how to get to resources and other valuable information.

Phone Friend, 1990 - 1994
Hotline for latch key children and teens that need assistance with homework as well as recommendations on how to handle various situations that affect youth today. Topics include suicide, friendships, homework, communication with parents, afraid of being alone, teaching them not to answer doors when their parents are not home and other numerous situations as they occur.
